IWC Mark X

Updates

The long list of updates that was previously here has been moved to: Update Log

Introduction

The IWC (International Watch Company) Mark X is a wrist watch that complied with the British Ministry of Defense (MoD) WWW specification. For a description of this specification click here

Although the IWC Mark X is NOT the rarest of WWWs, it is currently the most valued, money wise, of these watches among collectors.

Here is an introduction to IWC.

This page is an attempt to gather information and news about IWC MarkXs.

Numbers and Engravings

There are three numbers assocociated with each IWC Mark X:

Note that there seems to be a solid link between the M# and the 113#. The 113# minus the M# results in 1,118,980.

Additional Engravings

Some Mark Xs have up to three additional engravings on the outside casebacks, namely:

1) a Pakistani Broad Arrow

2) an "ATP" (plus sometimes an extra broadarrow)

3) KNIL.

When some IWC Mark Xs were returned by the army personel to the authourities, new markings were added and the watches were used for other purposes.

Pakistani Broad Arrow: Some IWC Mark Xs that were returned by the army personel were then used by the Pakistani Military. This is seen on IWC Mark Xs with an extra broad arrow on the case back that has a longer center line and a "P" next to it. I know of only one example - see M12283 in the table below.

ATP: - Army Time Piece - indicating this was army property. This engraving was sometimes added to the outside caseback. In addition, sometimes to signify the watch was no longer in use by the military, an extra broadarrow (opposing the original one in direction) was added.

KNIL: Some IWC Mark Xs that were returned by the army personel were then used by the Dutch Military. This is often seen on IWC Mark Xs with "KNIL" engraved on the back. For more information on KNIL click here. Another article on this topic is here.

Movement

Note: Initial versions of this section had incorrect information.

The IWC Mark X consists of a Calibre 83 IWC movement. This movement was in production from 1935 to 1947. About 67,800 movements were made. Some of these movements had Incabloc shock protection, some did not. It is my understanding that only 11,400 of the manufactured Cal. 83 movements had Incabloc. Cal. 83 movements exist with either 15 or 16 jewels.

(Some background: Around the time this web page started I thought that some IWC Mark Xs had Incabloc (shock protection) and some did not. This author was informed, by some one more knowledgeable, that all IWC Mark Xs had Incabloc. So that information was mentioned here. Later on someone pointed out an early (serial numbered) Mark X that did not have Incabloc. So then this author mentioned that some of the earlier Mark Xs did not have Incabloc. Sometime later another knowledgeable reader started doing some more research on this. He has mentioned, as far as I understand, all Mark Xs movements do not have Incabloc. He is unable to find one with Incabloc. So that is the current state of the findings.)

For more details on the Cal 83 movement see one of the introduction links above.

Case

The first thing that comes to mind is the fact that the IWC Mark X is the only WWW watch that is a snap back. All the other WWWs were screw back. I am not aware of the reason for this. (I assume the specifications for WWWs required the watch to be screw back.)

The steel case is of reasonable quality for what I can gather. The original (unpolished) cases had a 'shined' finish to it, unlike some WWWs that had a brushed finish to them. On an IWC Mark X you tell that the outside caseback has been polished when you see thin concentric circles on it. On a non-polished outside caseback you will not see this.

A few comments on the fixed pin bars follows. These I believe were poorly designed/manufactured. I have seen numerous Mark Xs with problems here. The holes that hold the pin are often NOT placed in the same location on each lug. Therefore this can result in a crooked pin bar placement. Also, the holes of the bin bar holes are somewhat bigger than the size of the pin bar points. This results in a sliding of the pin bar within the hole. For this reason, I think, you will see some soldering done around the pin bar hole to remedy this for a number of Mark Xs.

The case measures 35 mm not including the crown.

Dials

There are various Mark X dials that can be found. What follows is an attempt to categorize them.

Restorations

Some collectors choose to get their Mark X restored. Often the restoration is done (usually rather well) by the IWC factory in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Most Mark Xs that have not been restored, are in rough shape.

Fakes

I wish to inform my readers that I am starting to see more and more fakes or even partial fakes. Buyers please be careful. Read this page as a guide. But please be aware that I might make mistakes. Do your homework. Ask questions in public forums such as the iwc forum or the mwr forum. The folks there are usually very helpful.

I try to put on this page the information I know of at the time of the writing. Sometimes I get more information later on which will lead me to know about negative aspects of a watch (or watches) that I was not aware of earlier. I try to keep things up to date, but I may be late from time to time. Please keep this in mind when you read this page. Do not take what I write here as cast in stone.

Jan 29 '10 WARNING: Ebay(Germany). I have seen an example of this with an incorrect case. The movement is encircled with a strange spacer. The dial and hands are wrong. I am not sure about the crown. I think it has an authentic caseback. The main problem though, I repeat, is that the main case is incorrect. Buyers / Collectors be aware of this. (Not added to statistics.)
M12328 -Orig- .
NEW
Nov 12 '13 Seen on the web at an auction house in the UK. Quite interesting as this now has what looks like authentic hands and dial. The crown is a non-authentic replacement. Although the movement looks like an authentic cal 83, the serial number of the movement starts with a '98' when an authentic matching movement would USUALLY have had a movement serial number starting with 107, 108 or 109. Collectors / buyers should be aware of this. Nevertheless, a very nice recreation.

Mar 05 '12 On reviewing the pictures, I would like to point out that I am not sure if the case is correct or not. At this point I just don't know.
Mar 05 '12 Owned by a collector in Tasmania, Australia. He bought it from India. Vendor in India said he got it in a batch from Pakistan. The dial, hands and crown are incorrect. The case and movement seem fine. The outside caseback is unusual, not having the expected markings, but a Pakistani broadarrow and a crudely written M# instead. The engravings on the inside caseback look OK. I think this watch is authentic. A very interesting example.

Mar 23 '06 Ebay(UK). Misc. dial. The caseback markings on this one should be thought about carefully. The '7' of the M# clearly seems to have overstruck a '6' on both the inside and outside of the caseback M# markings. It is worth noting that since the caseback contributes significantly to the value of the watch, this should be kept in mind. Nevertheless, it is to the best of my knowledge an authentic caseback, but I am NOT that confident. In addition the polished caseback has an extra number on the outside caseback that is hard to detect. Also note the movement is not in the best of shape.

Sep 05 '09 I have been sent scans of this watch from the owner of (what I am highly confident of is) the authentic version of this watch. I have made the scans I have of the fake version unavailable for viewing. Authentic versions are in scans 9-13. Please be aware there is an authentic version of this watch known and at least one fake version. The authentic version is quite a nice example. The owner is from Denmark.
Jul 15 '09 I have seen a version of this watch that seems to be legit for sale at a well known watch forum. The pictures I have seen leave me with a postitive impression, but as of this writing I have NOT seen the movement NOR the inside caseback. Please be aware of this and the fact that there may be legit versions of this watch and non-legit versions of this watch out there.

Miscellaneous

'Sold on' dates known so far:

  • February 22, 1944 (likely incorrect)
  • April 7, 1944 (likely incorrect)
  • February 21, 1945
  • February 25, 1945

A well known collector of IWCs has looked into getting archival information
on Mark Xs at the IWC office in Schaffhausen. Not much information was found.
In particular to note though was the fact that what was found suggested
that these watches were "All sold on one date in February 1945". This clearly
is in dispute with at least two of the dates mentioned above. A second collector
has done this also and he too has confirmed that all 6000 IWC Mark Xs were sold
    in February 1945.
